Dehydration
When a dog is dehydrated, it may drink water continuously. Dehydration in dogs is dangerous and can even be life-threatening.
To check if your dog is dehydrated, you can pinch the skin on the back of its neck, then release it. If the skin flattens back into place, it’s not dehydrated. If the skin remains elevated, it may be dehydrated.
Fever
If your dog seems lethargic, has an abnormal body temperature, and is drinking water constantly, it may have a fever. It’s essential for pet owners to promptly cool down their dogs.
A healthy dog’s body temperature should range between 37.7 to 39.2 degrees Celsius. If it doesn’t drop, consult a veterinarian.
Underlying Health Issues
Various health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease, can lead to excessive drinking in dogs. So, if you notice your dog drinking large amounts of water, be attentive to its overall health.
High Salt Intake
Just like humans, dogs may drink more water if they consume a salty diet. If your dog is drinking a lot of water, consider the salt content in its food. Feeding dogs too much salt can lead to tear stains and rough fur.
Post-Exercise Hydration
After exercise, dogs may drink more water. It’s advisable not to offer water immediately after exercise. Allow your dog to rest and cool down before providing water. During regular exercise outings, you can also incorporate some training sessions.
