Does Your Pup’s Teeth Fall Out? The Teething Process in Dogs

Will puppies change their teeth? Yes, they will. It’s a normal process, not due to calcium deficiency.

Usually, dogs undergo tooth-changing around four to six months of age. It begins around two to four months when they start changing their incisors (the six teeth located between the canines on the sides of the mouth). By five to six months, all the incisors will have changed into adult teeth, including the canines.

Do puppies lose teeth while teething?

Puppies generally go through the teething phase when they are around 4 to 6 months old, during which they first lose the six incisors located in the middle of their mouth. At 5 to 6 months, the remaining teeth will all change into adult teeth.

During the process of teething, puppies may feel pain and itchiness in their teeth and gums, causing them to occasionally exhibit restlessness. Therefore, it is not surprising that they may chew on things indiscriminately. Owners can easily get through this teething period by providing proper guidance and redirection for the puppies.

To prevent the puppy from venting its teething frustration everywhere, owners should prepare some teeth-grinding toys, dental sticks, and chewable dog gums to divert their attention. Otherwise, your furniture and slippers may become the target of their teething.

When puppies change teeth, the discarded milk teeth are usually not found. It’s highly likely that they have been swallowed by the puppies or simply dropped somewhere. However, there’s no need to worry as this won’t have any adverse effects on the puppy’s health. It’s essential to ensure that the new teeth come in properly and replace the old ones to avoid any issues with misaligned teeth.

Puppy milk teeth are small, thin, and very sharp, which is why puppies are more likely to bite people. The canine teeth are larger and thicker than the other teeth, they are white in colour, and the incisors are neatly arranged with tips that are more rounded than the milk teeth.
