The Kelpie puppy is a medium sized dog and they have an athletic build. They were bred as working dogs and even at home, they need to be kept busy. Kelpies are also extremely intelligent and can be taught to do many things. Kelpies have a charming look and they are loyal to their owner and family which makes them a great family pets as well as companions. Although it might not be the best choice for first time dog owner as the need to be socialised and trained properly.
In 1870, the Rutherfords, a Scottish immigrant family, brought six black-tan coloured Collies from the British to Australia. Generally identified as Collies in Scotland. These herding dogs aroused the interest of Australian sheep breeders due to their good work, therefore breeding started with other herding dogs. A female dog born from one such cross-breed was give the name ‘Kelpie’, which means – the water spirit in Gaelic.
