A Dog-Friendly Snow Holiday at Dinner Plain

We want to share with you a dog-friendly snowy paradise in Australia – Dinner Plain! Dinner Plain is a popular resort village during the snow season, with many accommodations being pet-friendly. We decided to take our dog to play in the snow during this season.

Pet Friendly Accommodation

Make sure to book accommodation in advance! We planned our trip for late July and booked in late April, and places were already filling up. Be sure to book accommodation 4 to 5 months in advance, either on Airbnb or by searching online for Dinner Plain Alpine Village. The cost during the snow season ranges from $600 to $1500 per night. The best part is stepping outside and being surrounded by snow – truly amazing!

Transportation

Snow chains are mandatory when driving up the mountain. Remember to rent them before heading up. We rented them for 7 days for $70 at a gas station in the nearby town of Bright. They provide instructions on how to put them on and even give you an instructional video. There are Chain Fitting Bays along the way where you can put them on. The speed with snow chains should not exceed 40 km/h. It’s quite manageable, just drive slowly.

Dog-Friendly Snow Holiday

If your dog is not used to snowy conditions, make sure to dress them warmly. If they are playing in the snow for an extended period, it’s essential to put shoes on them – our pup got frostbite, and his paws started bleeding. Bring paw balm too!

Inside Dinner Plain, there’s a large enclosed basketball court where dogs can be off-leash. Remember to keep them on a leash in other parts of the village. The basketball court is relatively easy to find, near the main road; just take a stroll with your dog, and you should locate it.

Once your dog has had enough fun, leave them home and head to the ski fields! The closest ones to Dinner Plain are Mt Hotham and Big D, just a 20-minute drive away. Big D even has night skiing on Wednesday evenings, so you can continue the fun if your morning session isn’t enough!
