Humans + excessive chocolate = stomach ache
Dogs + excessive chocolate = more severe consequences
Is it true? Yes, but what is the underlying principle?
Chocolate contains toxic compounds for dogs Theobromine and caffeine in chocolate are two compounds that can make dogs sick. Unlike humans, dogs cannot metabolise these chemicals normally.
Theobromine and caffeine have a stimulating effect on the nervous system. Dogs that have eaten chocolate may exhibit hyperactivity, increased heart rate, tremors, muscle spasms, and uncontrolled excitement. They not only become thirsty and urinate frequently but also experience more severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, and even death in very rare cases.
Dogs may not exhibit any adverse reactions after eating chocolate ice cream, chocolate cookies, or chocolate brownies for a reason. The level of toxicity of chocolate to dogs depends on the type of chocolate, the amount ingested, and the size of the dog.
Cases of dogs dying from chocolate poisoning are quite rare. This only occurs when the theobromine content in the dog’s body reaches 100 milligrams/kilogram.
As a precaution, it is best not to let your dog come into contact with the chocolate. But just in case, if your dog eats a chocolate product, you need to closely monitor the situation. If your dog shows any adverse reactions, immediately call a veterinarian and keep the chocolate packaging to give to the veterinarian.
